What is a Kidney Infection
A kidney infection occurs when bacteria from the urinary tract travel further up to infect the kidney. It is not the same as a bladder infection or a urinary tract infection (UTI), which affect the lower part of the urinary system, but these infections may occur at the same time or a UTI can progress to a kidney infection.
Kidney Infection Symptoms
Kidney infection symptoms include fever, back pain, flank (side) pain, abdominal pain, frequent urination, urge to urinate, pain when urinating, blood in the urine, chills, nausea, feeling tired or very weak, and loss of appetite. Kidney infection symptoms usually develop quickly over a few hours or days.
Treatment for kidney infection involves taking a course of antibiotics. For some people, painkillers may also be required.
