Online Campaign Launched to Ensure No Woman Has To Face Cancer Alone

- The ‘Tell Her’ Movement Makes It Easy For Canadians to Send a Note of Support to a Woman with Cancer -

When a woman is diagnosed with cancer, her world is turned upside down. Amid the fear and worry inherent with a diagnosis, she may also struggle with feelings of isolation. In a survey of women who have been diagnosed with cancer, conducted by the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation (CCTFA Foundation), just over one-half of respondents said they felt supported on their cancer journey. A campaign launched by online support community, supported by Shoppers Drug Mart WOMEN, makes it easy to send an encouraging and thoughtful message to a woman with cancer, a simple gesture that can go a long way to making her feel supported. Canadians are encouraged to visit the pharmacy counter at Shoppers Drug Mart to pick up information on the ‘Tell Her’ Movement to ensure no woman has to face cancer alone.

The “Tell Her” Movement gives Canadians simple tools to send an inspirational message of support to a woman with cancer, while also making her aware of the valuable online community and resources available for her at Visitors to can choose from three ways to join the “Tell Her” Movement:

  • Users can personalize and send one of three beautiful and thoughtful e-card templates, each with a different theme: thinking of you, encouragement and milestone/celebration. In addition to a message of support, each e-card also includes information about, a supportive online community where women with cancer and those who support them can connect, confide and share experiences with others on the cancer journey, through forums, blogs and polls. The site also offers informative articles and resources to help manage the social and emotional challenges of cancer; 
  • Add the name of a woman they’re thinking of to an online support wall; or 
  • Forward a personalized e-card to friends, encouraging them to join the Movement. Digital badges are also available that can be added to a personal blog. blogger Katie Evans was just 26 when she was diagnosed with cancer. “I don’t think people realize how isolating cancer can be,” she says. “It’s hard for friends and family to understand exactly what you’re going through and often they want to help but aren’t sure how. Sometimes, people also do or say nothing because they’re afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing. For me, just hearing, 'I’m thinking of you’ or ‘I’m here for you’ was supportive. It made me feel less alone.”

Sherry Abbott is as 23-year cancer survivor and the Executive Director of the CCTFA Foundation. She says that for her, having the support of those around her had a major impact on her cancer journey. “I was fortunate in that I had access to wonderful medical care to help take care of my physical self, but in addition to that, it was the immense support of friends and family that really gave me the strength to face the most challenging of days during treatment and beyond,” she says. “At the CCTFA Foundation we truly believe that when a woman feels supported, she is better able to face the challenges of cancer.
