Shoppers Drug Mart™ Weekend To End Women's Cancers® Credited in New Cancer Drug Announcement

Team Shoppers Drug Mart walkers, customers and supporters celebrate major breakthrough announcement

Toronto, ON – June 24, 2013 - Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix’s efforts to support a cure for women’s cancers have been reenergized this week with the announcement of a major breakthrough in a decade-long pursuit to develop a new class of "sharpshooter" cancer drugs.

This new medication zeroes in on a specific target within cancer cells. Researchers hope that with this new drug cancer can be stopped in its tracks without harming normal cells. As an added benefit, cancer patients would be spared many of the devastating side effects of conventional chemotherapy.

This new drug was developed by Dr. Tak Mak of the Princess Margaret and Dr. Dennis Slamon of UCLA. Dr. Tak Mak delivered profound words, reminding us all of the power of our commitment to the Shoppers Drug Mart™ Weekend To End Women's Cancers® when he said, “The incredible fact that this drug has been developed solely with donor and grant dollars makes it an even more extraordinary accomplishment.” Dr. Mak added, “I cannot promise you it will work because in advanced human cancer, there are many other questions we do not have answers to. But we promise you, this is the beginning,” an emotional Mak told reporters at the hospital. “There will be another drug that we will be filing for next year. And next year and next year until we get this done,” he said, choking back tears. Mak’s wife died of breast cancer in 1998. “The key supporters of this important discovery research and the development of CFI-400945 have been the walkers and their donors in the Shoppers Drug Mart™ Weekend To End Women's Cancers®, the Campbell family, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Genome Canada and The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)".

This is a wonderful reminder to all of us, current and past fundraisers of the Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, that your support has contributed to the development of a potentially life-saving cancer drug. Now that’s commitment to Women’s health!
