I have been using the 4G for years - it was a perfect dark brown - not too dark and with a golden hue not brassy or red. Sadly they have discontinued this colour and after calling L'Oréal, the rep could not tell me which colour was the closest match. She suggested 4 or 4A. I went for 4 - mistake. This is such a dark brown colour that it is almost black. I have tried the 4A years ago before landing on the 4G and it was not a good dark brown colour - almost reddish. Disappointed that I no longer have my colour and don't know why they would discontinue this shade. It was a much more neutral dark brown that blended well with my caramel highlights. Any suggestions on a new brand and colour to try? Looks like I'll be going elsewhere…..

Was a change in this product? I've used root rescue in dark brown but the last two times I have used it, the color fades on my gray hairs within 3 washes. Given it's supposed to be permanent, I would not expect it to wash out. I've used this product many times before so i'm not sure why it's not holding anymore.

Did not cover at all. I followed directions for stubborn grays. I bought 2 kits to go over my entire scalp. It didn't work anywhere.

I used the dark brown and found it very dark. Would love to know what 1 shade down would be. Aside from this, I left the colour on an extra 10 minutes as I have very grey patches that sometimes do not cover well. The coverage of this colour worked well for me just found it very dark.

Unfortunately I didn't take before and after photos but I just used the Magic Root Rescue 10 minute kit for the second time and I highly recommend it. It comes with great instructions and a small brush if you'd rather not use the applicator tip. My hair feels soft afterward (I have thick coarse hair). I'm 57 years old and have very resistant gray hair at the temples. I used #5 which matches my current color and it did cover the grays on the top of my head but at the temples it looks more like light brown instead of dark brown. I plan to use #4 for the stubborn areas.

This has just the right amount of colorant to do my roots. Matched my hair color well. Only complaint is the "10 minute" time frame. Needed 30 minutes for my hard to color grey.
